Harlequin toad project receives support from Colombian government

Biome’s partner in Colombia (Fundación Atelopus) recently announced the renewal of its five-year Framework Permit for the Collection and Handling of Specimens in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (SNSM), granted by the National Authority of Environmental Licenses through Resolution No. 001435, on May 19, 2026. This opens a new chapter for Fundación Atelopus in terms of expanding the scope of its scientific and community work in the SNSM. Thanks to this permit, Fundación Atelopus will now be able to develop expeditions and monitoring programs in new locations in the SNSM—including remote and unexplored areas—with an emphasis on endemic, threatened, and ecologically valuable species, such as the emblematic harlequin toads of the genus Atelopus. Beyond monitoring and research, this permit strengthens Fundación Atelopus’ capacity to generate knowledge useful for informing conservation decisions re: restoration and the protection of important ecosystems.

This new phase will also allow Fundación Atelopus to deepen its work and collaboration with local communities through the promotion and implementation of participatory research, community monitoring, environmental education, and community-led conservation initiatives in rural areas of the SNSM. Similarly, Fundación Atelopus will also strengthen its partnerships and continue to develop ‘biocultural conservation initiatives’ with the indigenous peoples of the SNSM i.e., the Arhuaco, Kogui, Wiwa, and Kankuamo. Their knowledge of the territory, commitment to conservation, and ongoing participation are the keys for the protection of the mountain ecosystems and for building ‘grass roots’ solutions in the SNSM.

This five-year permit renewal represents a significant vote of confidence for Fundación Atelopus’ conservation and community work in the SNSM. Biome Conservation is very proud to support Fundación Atelopus and its mission to protect the natural and cultural heritage of the SNSM.
